A bed can fit on a floor plan and still be difficult to deliver or awkward to live with. Taking a few measurements before you order protects the space around the bed, the delivery route and the features you want to use every day.
1. The bed footprint
Measure the full external width and length of the frame, not only the mattress size. Upholstered side rails, winged headboards and footboards can add several centimetres. Mark the footprint on the floor with removable tape so you can see how it affects movement around the room.
2. Space around the bed
Allow enough room to walk comfortably and to open wardrobes, drawers and doors. If you are choosing divan storage, measure the clear opening space for each drawer. For an ottoman, check that the mattress platform can lift without meeting a shelf, sloping ceiling or wall light.
3. Headboard height
Measure from the floor and consider windowsills, sockets and artwork. A floor-standing headboard can be significantly taller than the mattress and base. If the bedroom has a sloping ceiling, check the height at the exact point where the bed will sit.
4. Doorways and stair turns
Record the narrowest doorway, corridor and staircase width, plus the height beneath low landings. Pay attention to tight turns and bannisters. Removeable doors can help, but the largest packaged section still needs a continuous route to the room.
5. Lift and access restrictions
If delivery involves a lift, measure its door and internal depth. Tell the retailer about restricted parking, upper floors or unusual access before delivery day. Sharing these details early lets the team advise on sectional bases, assembly and the most practical product configuration.
